STREET ART FESTIVAL KATOWICE

The first one in this year festival of street art in Poland. Katowice is the old, industrial city, with a great history. Now, changing its face to the regional capital of culture.

Supposed to be spring, but it was very, very cold. I made three installations: two of pottery and one of laces.

Project dedicated to Naomi Klein. The goal of this project is to show the moral bankruptcy of corporate capitalism on the global level. Corporate Social Responsibility (link here) it's just a PR lie. The sign is real, so are the biuldings. The photos are edited. Socially Conscious Bank is an open project . Anyone can join and create a bankrupt branch of FSCB. Just send me a picture of dilapidated and closed building from your city. Every picture will be used to make an photomontage portraying the next, closed branch of FSCB. Oak Beach

Oak Beach is my favorite place at the Baltic sea, I come here every summer holiday.

This year I tried to introduce street art to the beach. Traditionally, I use my laces as

a stencils, but for the first time I used them to created installations.

The effects of my work aroused great interest. Many people made pictures of the

installations, they moved them around from place to place, they were even used

for the construction of beach camps. Small children with great joy played around them.

These objects made of lace, though very delicate, survived on the beach over a week.

Muse of Street Art

Saski Garden (Ogród Saski) - former king's garden in the center of Warsaw, since 1727 open for public.
Main attraction is the group of 21 baroque sculptures - allegorical muses of human's creativity and science. One of them was an orphan, with no allocation. I adopt her :-)
Due the unique, historical value of the place, my illegal installation had temporary character.

Summer in the middle of winter and my first work outside Polish borders. I did it especially for this journey, reflecting a beautiful lace in clay, which I received from a nice lady at Koło market place. I really recommend this flea market, this nice lady also sells wonderful homemade lace earrings. It is worth going and finding her there. During our stay in Thailand we moved a few times until we found a perfect beach. I left my lace on the pillar of a local bar, which served drinks in a coconut and- for the brave- cocktails with local mushrooms J. 2010- THE CRAB YEAR My new inspiration. I'm going moulding. We'll see the effect when it gets warmer.

Łazienki Project

With a big dose of sentiment I look at my project for the Łazienki. I wanted to do a large lace for the tree, with dark brown clay and dark green enamel, gold plated. Implementation process itself is a challenge to me. This work would have to be split into fragments, so that they can be burn in a ceramics oven. The process of drying and shrinkage of individual pieces is always a surprise. Such work in such a place can not be done illegally, I would need a few days for measuring. Therefore, this project is waiting already for several months in the Łazienki office, maybe it will be accomplished when better times come for street art…

Someone stole my lace from a park in Brodno. I went to visit it and take a picture in the autumn scenery, and I saw ... an empty space. I should be prepared for such things, but still the whole day I was feeling really sad.

This is how it looked like. If anyone has seen it somewhere - please notify the nearest police station. It was in the course of vaccination. A desperate child is waiting.

Today at the Koło flea market, I found this beautiful lace and I started to make a new piece of work. The effect exceeded my wildest expectations, it will look beautiful after burning. I was so happy that I even baked a cake.

At the moment I am doing some works but I don’t know where I will put them. I have some new (but very old) lace which I found at the Kolo flea market and I am experimenting with small patterns. I would like to stick a lace this year, but not necessarily in Warsaw. I asked in Poznan if they would like to have me. Wroclaw would be nice too. If the temperature gets below 5°C, I can no longer stick my work outside, that would be a shame.

In Królikarnia Gardens

Surprisingly my ladybirds are in Krolikarnia’s gardens. They were suppose to be in a different location, but I think that this is a perfect place for them, every day there are lots of kids in the gardens.

This work’s name is “When my mummy is not looking”. It’s to honor all the small kids, who when their mothers are not looking go crazy J

Well what can I say, my work is going to be presented at theKrólikarnia - department of sculpture of National Museum. What is more, two of my works are there - one is a lace on the tree just in front of the palace, and the second one, after a special request of the curator, are the ladybirds placed on the pedestal next to the building, terrace and the slope.

Our exhibition was organized by the Outdoor Art Foundation. The opening of the exhibition went really well, the weather was nice, probably thanks to my monthly prayers, and lots of people came too. Bartek Świątecki was preparing his tape installation whole Saturday. In the green space it looked really interesting. My lace is a bit different then usually, it does not match the tree but it matches with the colours of the palace which is behind it.

There were fruits, sweets and light music (Banco de Gaia and chill sets of Degweed and Pete Tong). On a big screen which we managed to hide between the trees we showed photos of my work and the audience sat on benches.

For Natka In Kalimba

Natka from Kalimba invited me ( and my ladybirds). I was frilled because Natka makes amazing things for children herself, and the inside of her cafe is a compact and over thought project. My ladybirds are the first “aliens” in the world designed by her, so I guess she trusts me and my work or at least that’s what I think.

It was great fun and a little crowdie. I told the kids about street art, I showed them the photos, we did some clay work, and after that with great honors I climbed the ladder and stuck the ladybirds on the wall. I was surprised because all the children listened to me with great interest. I thought that it might be boring for them. Keeping the attention of a crowd of 5 year old children is something I am proud of.

BRZESZCZE-VISUAL ART FESTIVAL

I was very pleased, that I was invited to the festival. A small mine town in Śląsk, a very charming lady Danuta Kazimerczak from a local Culture House who after finishing her studies tries to bring some colours to her home town by convincing the local authorities to look at art with a friendly eye. Her actions remind me of a modern dr Judym ( a character of a polish positivistic novel ). I hope that her enthusiasm does not fade away, but becomes contagious like the Ebola virus.The event accompanied the Rock ReggAe Festival, which for over five years has been organized by the group of local funs. I hope that every city in Poland would have such gang which, instead of being pessimistic and drinking beer all the time, works and fulfills their passions which bring good to the whole local society. Besides me there were also Goro, Ixi Color ( in the past know as Adam X) and 2SH. I tried to renew a small part of a neglected public space- a cash desk of a local sport club. The effects can be seen on the photos, the lace in this case is my signature. P.S Artist don’t say this out loud but street art is as hard as any physical work. Just like construction works. Uff.

Making my holiday duty I visited the Trójmiasto. For this occasion I prepared two works. For Gdynia a summer, marine lace, which I planned to stick somewhere near the harbour. For Gdańsk something for the Old Town, to stick on a brick near the crane. I completed the plan in 100 %, I found the exact places I was looking for. Gdynia- Kościuszko’s park:

For a long time I haven’t done anything for the parks. Until today, I managed to do the fitting for a lace, that I prepared about a month ago for a Sculpture Park in Bródno. I was at its opening and saw a nice looking tree. I think it belongs to the Paradise- a park installation of Paweł Althamer. I took the measure, but modeled it just now. It will be ready in August.

STENCIL JAM

I took part in a fourth jubilee Stencil Jam. It was very wet, in some places water was up my knees. There were many cans of paint and stencils floating on the water, a lake formed on the Sunday afternoon in the place where the festival took place. Those who made their stencils from the foil won, the ones made from cardboard broke up. I used my laces as stencils. It worked out quite well:

This time something specially for a celebrity-friendly club, and if there will be enough space maybe with time for a hetero-friendly. I experienced it myself, a friendly hairdresser who is a friend of the selecting person went with me and so I was able to enter.

Boys played so charmingly and excitingly that I have decided to give them a lace. The colour goes perfectly with the style of the inside and with the state of mind of the regulars. The lace is whole set with glitter stones. I know, I know they should be from Svarovski, but I hope that this small variation from the dogma will be forgiven, especially when taking into consideration the fact that the lace will be exposed in street conditions. Of course if there will be an individual client, the stones can be branded or noble.

Trying to meet the future, I prepared a photo shooting, so there won’t be any necessity of repeating the whole act of sticking and making new photos. If some stylist will be enthusiastic about my work- here you are, photos for Cosmo and Elle are ready.

This time it’s Lublin, charming, cosy Old Town. The whole day I was looking for a perfect spot. I had few laces with me, different colours, sizes, but they just didn’t fit anywhere. Only at dusk I found a greyish or bluish door on Krakowska Gate. It’s a beautiful, Gothic, fourteenth century city gate, but the little door are more or less modern, so my postmodern lace is not an act of barbaric destruction.

I always wanted to put a lace in this beautiful place. In fact it’s a monument, but if all those banners and signs are legally there than maybe my lace won’t interrupt the space. I am sure that nobody will feel the disharmony. I really tried hard to select good colours that would fit with the wall. I think that my ornament has a cool dialogue with the old ornaments.

This one was made for the Koło Park. It is situated in the small shrubbery just next to the bicycle-path. It is almost the same as the background.

DISCREET

It is one of the most discreet laces that I have made so far. First of all- the colour, which is almost identical as the background. Secondly- the location. This is simply the car park next to our house.

This work is best fitted to the place. This time I didn’t take the measure, I filled the space with clay and waited until it dried up. After that I took it out, baked it and at the end I put enamel on top.

For this lace I had to take the measure, unfortunately it shrank a bit more then it should. Well, I am still learning.

For a longer period of time I couldn’t find the right tree. When I took the measure there were no leaves so everything looked different.

Today we made two very important works. I made one small lace especially for Ewa, it will be for the little door next to “Między”. It fits perfectly.

White clay, first baking- brown enamel, second- copper.
Later on we went to the Old Town. We stuck the lace that was made especially for this place, earlier I took the measure. Unfortunately, during the baking process it shrunk more then I have expected, that’s why it is a few millimetres too short, but it’s not that bad. It’s one of the roughest works that I have so far done. I was very careful to harmonized the colour of the clay with the background, and made sure that the enamel won’t shine. After all the bridge on the Castle Square is an exceptional place.

KĘPA POTOCKA IS READY!

It took a lot of time. I had to clean the knot in the tree, fill it up with plaster, take the measure and form the “smoked cheese”, do the fitting in, the cutting, the baking, enamelling, second baking, second painting and at the end warming up in the oven. Altogether two weeks. Today I stuck it in. I’m so happy.

Ania is better now, she turned on the oven in the workshop so I could bake the work which I made last week. I am so happy! During the weekend I finished up the enamelled laces, some of them are already in the city. Ania- lots and lots of health and a lot of smile.

I took the lace which I made specially for the old brick. It was suppose to be for the Old Town but I decided to give it up for Łódź. Łódź was once a very beautiful city, it is still full of old, destroyed ornaments. I thought that they would like a younger friend. I looked for a place where it would fit nicely and it turned out to be the Manufacture.

This one I’ve made specially for the rusty flap cast-iron gutter of the Ujazdowski Castle, next to the café “Okna”. It will make the time spent at the tables outside the café more pleasant. This is the way it will look after I stuck it on the gutter. This time I would like to do it legally. I couldn’t wait so I made a small photo shooting.

At night I prepared the application for the tree at Kępa Potocka, the one I filled with plaster during the weekend. It looks like a sole of the Chinese gym shoe or as a specially designed “smoked cheese” ( by the way- it’s an interesting topic for a designer…). I think that it will be an interesting accomplishment.

The free days in May made Warsaw city a really deserted place. I was pedalling on my bike and searching for other “perfect” locations for my works. The accomplishment in the park beneath the Cytadela turned out really charming. The tree itself prepared a frame and paspartu for my work:

In the evening in Kępa Ptocka, I became a tree dentist. I removed the tooth decay, filled the cavity and an excellent place for another application came into existence.

Hard-working Easter

Through entire Easter holidays we stuck the ladybirds. In broad daylight, in crowded places, smiling to those who were watching. The glue has to dry for 48 h, for this time I cover the ladybirds with paper, this way nobody will notice them. The official uncovering in two days time. I can’t wait to see the reactions of people.

I baked them for the second time in my own oven, I did it because they have a new colour of tentacles. They looked a bit horrifying all together in the oven. The real enamel needs a baking temperature of 1200°C, that I can do only in the workshop oven.

For a couple of days I kept promising myself that in the evening I will stick up this colourful lace on Krucza street next to the Green Coffee, but I am always too lazy. Today I mobilized myself. It looks great, lighted up by the street lamp. As if the architect made this empty space just for my lace.

I would be so happy to go out into the city on a warm spring night together with my ladybirds.

I have been thinking what could I do. I was looking for a form, which wasn’t used before- paint, stencil, sticker. I was looking for something that little children could discover in a small corner, smile and start to look for other small things stuck on the walls in their city. They could also encourage their parents to play with them. Since I started to pay some more attention to the street art I have noticed that it is almost everywhere. It’s diverse, colourful, interesting, funny, it even comments the current events....

And so it turned out that I will make ceramic ladybirds. Lasting time- providing nobody will destroy them-100 years!

Every ladybird is a hard work and takes lots of time. Carving, then drying- a week time. Next comes the grinding, enamelling and first baking- that takes another week. Then two corrections of the enamel- again two weeks. Altogether a month. I would like my ladybirds to stay in the city as long as possible.

Moulding, drying, baking

The biggest problem when working with clay is the banding of the ready made elements during the drying process. The back space of the application has to be flat, otherwise the application won’t stick to the wall. In the workshop it is best to use plaster form for the drying process (plaster takes up water evenly). At home the best thing that takes up water is a newspaper. So during the moulding process I change the newspapers a few times, after that I put my work between two newspapers and I put a heavy book on top of it. The drying process takes up 3 to 7 days and tons of newspapers.

First City Works

I am not in love with Warsaw. But since it is a bit greenish outside, it’s charming. April was nice this year.

Every time I passed by this old pole, which probably a few years ago supported the gate to the Fort of Bema, I thought that there is something round missing there. That’s how I got the idea to make a lace for this place.
